* Arserape in contemporary superhero comics. Don't
care. If having z-level superhero cast characters
analised and set on fire is what it takes to drain
three bucks out of the Android's Dungeon crowd, then
I am the last person you need to be complaining
to about it, because I didn't write them and I don't
fucking publish them. I don't care. They can have a
Superhero Arserape Funnies Parade down the middle
of the fucking high street and the most I'd do is take
a picture. Don't. Care.

* Related: the oohspooky Darkening Of The
Superhero Comics. Shut the fuck up. Go and
watch ICHI THE KILLER and then come back
and tell me that Bendis and Millar and Meltzer
etc etc are killing superhero fiction and, I dunno,
dripping blood-flecked semen all over your
childhood toys or whatever they're being accused
of today.

* Further: neither Hawkeye nor Blue Beetle
are Jesus, except possibly in your dreams after
your mummy has given you too much cough
medicine.

* Saving Superman. Stop writing to me about what
can be done to "save Superman." You know who
you are when you jabber on about that? You're
the retarded urchin who hobbles up to the big
landowner's house and says, "your house is awfully
dirty, mister. Can I clean it for you? Free of

fire afterwards."

It's always depressing seeing the store close up for the winter season but what's puzzled me for years is how do they keep the lease on the place during the off-season. I'm certain that the owners of the building still want their rent. Does the government provide special ice cream parlor subsidies?

I think what I'm looking for in the
Novella is something akin to the
music single experience, maybe.

Every month or so, if your ear's
to the ground, there is one genuinely
marvellous single. Everyone's
taste varies, of course. But in the
last few months I've experienced the
mad pop obsession with the likes of
The Arcade Fire's "Crown Of Love,"
Wolf Parade's "Dear Sons And
Daughters Of Hungry Wolves,"
Johnny Boy's "You Are The Generation
That Bought More Shoes" and, to
my lasting shame, "Can't Stand Me
Now" by the Libertines.

Self-contained experiences that
do something to the front of your
head, if not your heart and guts.
Short and replayable.

In a publishing system where OGNs
carry economic penalties...in a
direct market still geared to the
periodical... A team producing, say,
four 48pp novellas in a year is a
band. But cut loose from the serial.
It's not "the new issue of X" so
much as "the new book by Y & Z"
-- original self-contained works,
but produced on a periodical basis,
each standing under their own name.

Doesn't solve the problem of stores
wanting people in on a weekly basis.
But, that said, it took my local
store all month to sell out of TRANSMET
because the audience wasn't hardcore
comicsfan, but people with a
multiplicity of interests who found
the time once a month to come in
and buy the only comic they wanted.

A regular 32pp single with 22pp of
comics in it costs up to four US
dollars. A novella with a full 48pp
of comics would cost somewhere
between five and seven. And you
don't need the issue before it or
the issue after it to either make
sense of it or get a complete
experience from it (unless the
single is written specifically for the
format, like DEMO or GLOBAL
FREQUENCY, but they're getting
rare, as most of us are serialising
GNs through singles).

The novella stays in print. It gets
you out of the rut of being pulled
off the stand after a week like the
single. You don't live or die on the
initial orders. Like the TPB or OGN,
it's a permanent shelf-life item.

Wouldn't it be nice to at least try
to break a different form in the
comics stores? Establish a different
economy for original work? Screw
living and dying in singles. Leave
that whole thing behind.

I am a total schizophrenic, yes.

The red hand turns into a white guy and I start crossing with the heard thinking of Red Rocket 7 while listening to the Buzzcocks on this sunshine day. I barely notice bumping into someone in the middle of the crosswalk. Can't wait to crack open my comic. No wait. That's not how it happened. This 40-something man standing 6'4" and burly wearing a suit leaned in as we crossed each other and then bumped me. I stopped and looked back and he was still standing in the middle of the crosswalk looking mighty perplexed. I kept walking a few more yards and looked back again. He still hasn't moved. Too funny. I grin and motion "what?" as I kept walking down the sidewalk. There's another red hand and a shadow is cast over me as perplexed-burly-suit guy is now standing next to me. He asks what's so funny. He wants me to apologize. Because he thinks I bumped into HIM. This guy was sour and this went on for a bit until I asked him what his big-dick problem was? Burly-suit-guy was lookin' for a rumble. He asked me to follow him trying to lead me down a side street so he can re-arrange my face. Hey, Fuckface. Stop acting like a fuckin' child. I turned my back and kept on walking. I turned around one last time to find him standing there. Ever the perplexed-burly-suit guy.
